App Zone Improvement Challenge
Design challenge response to an existing need from Drone Deploy.
Full presentation can be viewed here - Google Slides
PROBLEM STATEMENT
App Zone Stacking:
“Multiple apps installed in the same zone stack above each other. This behavior currently has no limit, making the experience more confusing and cluttered as more apps are installed.”
Apps push off page as more added.
Apps presented in order installed.
Identifying appropriate apps for current purpose becomes confusing.
WHAT CUSTOMERS DO TODAY
The DroneDeploy Dashboard
The Dashboard in its native state in the web application via a laptop or mobile app, currently affords enough screen real estate to view the first 3-5 available Apps, below the designated project/flight info.
This leads users, to have to scroll through the dashboard to locate the desired app for their need. The apps are listed in the order installed
EXISTING CONDITIONS
Currently DroneDeploy has almost 70 available plugin apps, in these categories -
Agriculture (10)
Construction/Mining/Surveying (7)
Operations (5)
Flight (17)
Analytics (13)
Import/Export (15)
As more apps become available these numbers will likely also grow.
Currently management of installed apps is minimal, at a level of “Uninstall/Install” options available to the user”
“Stacking” of apps, dependent on user’s industry could lead from anywhere between 5 and 20 relevant apps being installed/utilized to make the most of DroneDeploy
USER RESEARCH
User Interviews and Research
30-45 Min. Interviews | 8 Users/Interviewees | Base Target/User Group | Used to develop “User Personas”
Insights gained from the interview and research process revealed that (1) confusion arises when there are too many installed apps, which can not be organized. (2) Users want a simple and clear way of managing installed apps, and (3) Users want to be easily locate the right app/plugin for their specific tasks.

ASSUMPTIONS
Number of Developer Driven Apps will continue to grow at a relatively steady pace - Approx at a rate of 1-2 per month over the next 24 months for 24-48 new ones by the end of 2020.
Current users fall into one of the two main industry categories (Agriculture or Construction) or are service providers to those INDUSTRIES
Current users, only have the uninstall method to “manage” their apps.
Users want to be able to sort/search/group their installed apps as well as manage/organise in appropriate ways
Potentially new categories/Use groups will emerge, bringing with them additional specific apps for surveying conditions/as builts/progress tracking etc.
Users utilize both the Mobile and Web version of DroneDelpoy - Mobile makeup is predominantly tablet based.

SOLUTION PROPOSAL
APP MANAGER AND DASHBOARD
Ways to organize and manage the apps are currently limited.
By introducing a means to sort/organize installed apps, as well as a method to review all apps, installed, uninstalled, by category, alphabetically etc, in an accessible and clean way.
The App Dashboard takes cues from the already existing layout used for project/advanced approach.
The App Manager acts as an extension to the dashboard, with great controls while consolidating the the existing marketplace and installed apps into one gallery.
